15 Essential Items Every Student Needs

Off to university or college and interested in ways to make life easier for yourself? No fear, we’ve put together a list of some really cool things that will help you stay organized and make your stay that much easier.

1. Under Bed Storage Boxes

There is a large variety of storage boxes available from wooden to plastic to even ones on wheels for easy access. You can use these to store your archived notes and books or any other items you don’t need to access on a daily basis.

This is also a great way to store some personal items that you don’t want other people to easily access.

2. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Roommates can be noisy. Invest in some good quality noise-canceling earphones for those times when you really need to focus and study for exams.

3. Bed Risers

If your bed isn’t raised high enough to allow for under bed storage boxes, then invest in some of these. As the name suggests, they raise your bed higher - allowing you to store things underneath.

You can also get ones with a built-in power outlet to charge your phone.

4. Dictionary Book Safe

A safe cleverly disguised as a dictionary. Place this on your bookshelf amongst the rest of your books and use it to safely store a few of your valuable items.

Get one that has a lock, just in case someone does happen to find it.

5. Robot Vacuum

These little creatures are incredibly useful. You can put it on before leaving for classes in the morning and you’ll come back to a nice clean floor when you return.

Invest in one and save yourself the time of having to vacuum yourself.

6. Mesh Gym Bag

Mesh gym bags are a great way to store your gym clothes while keeping them fresh and smell free. The mesh fabric ensures breathability and they also dry really fast. If it’s not really your thing, look at investing then in mesh laundry bags instead.

Then you can easily drop them into the wash after each gym session.

7. Coffee Maker

The key to surviving university? Coffee. Lot’s of coffee. There are a variety of machines available to suit your specific needs from a simple Nespresso to a very elaborate barista coffee machine.

Whatever your choice, you’ll be using it often!

8. Portable Power Bank

This one seems like a no-brainer. Don’t get caught with a dead phone battery. These are small and compact enough to carry around with you wherever you go

9. Storage Ottoman

A space saving, essential item. When living in a small space, a dual function item is something to go after whenever possible! A storage ottoman serves as a seat, a footstool, and space to store your books.  Win-win!

10. Student Apps

There are a plethora of apps available for making student life simpler. 'Cite This For Me' is an app that uses your phone’s camera to scan the barcode on your textbook.

It then creates a citation in whatever format your school uses.

11. Compact Printer

Invest in a compact printer like the HP Tango X. It connects via WiFi so you can print straight from your smartphone or laptop. When it comes to finals, you’ll be so glad to have this!

12. A Planner

Whether you like using a paper journal to plan your week or an app to plan your weeks ahead, stay organized and top of things like assignment due dates, classes, and exam schedules.

There is a large variety of options available out there, whether you need a pre-made template or prefer to create something custom to suit your own schedule.

13. Water Bottle

Perhaps the most obvious item on our list, an important one nonetheless! It’s really easy to forget to stay hydrated when being really focused and busy throughout the day.

Keep a water bottle on hand throughout the day and try to make “water checkpoints” throughout the day to make sure you’re getting enough H2O.

14. Slow Cooker

This one is a student life hack of note. You can just chuck all your ingredients into the pot in the morning before leaving for lecturers and when you get home you’ll have a delicious, warm meal ready and waiting for you.

Life doesn’t get much better than this.

15. First Aid Kit

Perhaps not an everyday essential item, it is something you wish you had when you need it! Keep a stash of some useful things you might need in a pinch - pain meds, band-aids, cough drops, etc.

You can buy a ready-made kit or set one up yourself.
