How to Read for PTE Academic

The reading section of PTE Academic requires you to explore your time management and problem-solving skills.

The Reading Section

The Reading Section of PTE Academic is the 2nd section of the exam. It is singled time ie. you get around 32-40 minutes (depending upon prompts) for the whole section.

The questions can vary from 15 to 20 in number. Your ability to comprehend written PTE English in an ideal time is tested in this section.

Types of Questions

There are five types of questions:
  1. Fill In The Blanks
  2. Multiple Choice, Single Answer
  3. Re-Order Paragraphs
  4. Reading & Writing: Fill In The Blanks
  5. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers

The MCQs

There are two types of MCQs in this section:
  1. Single Answer: Only One Correct Answer
  2. Multiple Answers: More than one correct Answer
Read the instructions to know the type of the question. In both cases, you will have to read a paragraph (of upto 300 words) and a question. There will be multiple options given for you to choose from.

Fill In the Blanks

There are two types of fill in the blanks:
  • Drag & Drop: A paragraph with several gaps will be given. A number of boxes with words will be provided below the paragraph. You have to drag and drop the correct word for each blank.
  • Drop-Down List: Each blank in a paragraph will have a drop-down list. You have to select the correct option from the list.

Re-Order Paragraphs

Several sentences appear on the screen in a random order. Your task is to arrange them in the correct order. The key is to read the sentences separately and understand the main idea so you can understand the logical paragraph that can be formed.

Time Management

As mentioned, the reading section is single timed. You have to wisely spend time on each question so you don't miss any of them. Ideally. no question should take more than 2.5 minutes. Adapt the skim & scan method to effectively read and get to the correct answers.
